Application for the Master’s degree programme
For application, Bachelor graduates in an engineering program like e-mobility, vehicle engineering, mechatronics, electrical engineering or mechanical engineering may be considered. An English or German language exam at level C1 or better and for some countries an APS (see below) is also required.
We strongly recommend applicants from non-EU countries like India, Pakistan, China etc. to submit the results of an international standard graduate test like GRE or GATE (see “Application – required documents and portal”).
Within the application process, you may get an invitation to an oral or electronic admission examination.
For master program applications, the following deadlines are important:
- 31 May for study start in winter semester (lectures starting middle of October). The application portal “campo” opens on 15 February. We strongly recommend you to apply early to have the chance to get an early admission!
- 31 October for study start in summer semester (lectures starting middle of April). The application portal “campo” opens on 15 September (the application portal may be open until 30 November, but if you apply later than 31 October, you will probably not receive your admission or rejection until the following year)
Applications can only be made online via www.master.fau.de!

The following documents are required for the application (in electronic form):
- From summer semester 2024 on, we strongly recommend applicants from non-EU countries like India, Pakistan, China etc. to submit the results of an international standard graduate test. This will strongly improve your chances of admission, since only about 10 % of our applicants get an admission to our master’s program. The submission of a standard graduate test makes it much easier for you to show and for us to assess your academic performance. It will also speed up your application process so that you have the chance to get an early admission to make your visa application easier. The following tests are accepted:
- „Graduate Record Examination (GRE)” as “subject test physics“, “subject test mathematics“ or “General Test” (https://www.ets.org/gre.html)
- „Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering“ (GATE) with an engineering test paper (https://gate2024.iisc.ac.in/)
- School leaving certificate (all pages of the certificate)
- University degree certificate (e.g. Bachelor) – if already available (University degree certificate, e.g. Bachelor with a proven grade (if no grade is shown, additional grade certificate from your examination office)
- Diploma Supplement or a complete overview of subjects and grades (Academic Report)
- Complete tabular curriculum vitae (with picture – please create it yourself with date and original signature, no form available)
- Letter of application / letter of motivation (approx. 1 A4 page, please create it yourself with the date and original signature, no form available). Please specify, if you want to study in English or German language.
- You may study the master’s program in English or German language. Therefore, international applicants require the following language certificates:
- 1. For studying the master’s degree in English language:
- proof of English language skills at the level of at least C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference (GER); you may refer to the equivalence table of the FAU Language Center (https://sz.fau.de/pruefungen/anrechnungen/)
OR
- 2. For studying the master’s degree in German language:
- proof of German language skills at the following level: at least DSH-2 with at least 74% of the achievable points in the written and oral part of the exam
- alternatively TestDAF with at least 4 points in all areas and 5 points in at least one area
- Other language exams will be checked individually by the admission committee for relevance.
- 1. For studying the master’s degree in English language:
- For requirements of APS certificate please see also https://www.fau.eu/education/application-and-enrolment/applying-for-masters-degree-programmes/#aps-india and for further information about APS: aps-india.de.

If an oral examination takes place according to ABMPO/TechFak appendix, section 7, it should cover a selection of the following topics:
- Quality of basic knowledge in the areas of “engineering fundamentals of electromobility” (in particular electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and computer science), “engineering applications of electromobility” (in particular electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and computer science) and “scientific fundamentals” (e.g. physics) and “math” (25 percent),
- Quality of the basic knowledge acquired in the bachelor degree, which forms the basis for a technical specialization corresponding to the selectable specialization areas of the Master’s degree; the applicant can select one of the specialization areas for the oral entrance examination (25 percent),
- Description of a successfully completed engineering project (e.g. bachelor thesis), quality of knowledge of the relevant literature (30 percent),
- positive prognosis due to increasing achievements in the course of studies in the engineering modules; Discussion on the basis of the final documents (especially Transcript of Records) of the first degree (20 percent).
If an electronic admission examination takes place according to ABMPO/TechFak appendix, section 6, it shall be held in the form of an electronic test, lasts 45-90 minutes and includes solving tasks from the basic areas of engineering as well as from the modules of the basic and orientation examination (GOP) as well as the subject-specific or course-related compulsory modules Paragraph 5 Sentence 2 No. 2 of the consecutive Bachelor’s degree program on which the respective Master’s degree program is based. More details about the electronic entrance examination, in particular whether the examination takes place with or without supervision/proctoring, and about the permitted aids will be communicated to the applicants when the date is announced; In the case of implementation under supervision, ABMPO/TechFak Section 7 Paragraph 3 Sentence 3 shall apply (regulations of the BayFEV and the “Satzung der FAU über die Durchführung elektronischer Fernprüfungen”).
